Over the past couple of months, I’ve posted quite a bit about what non-traditional inserts are available out there for Traveler’s Notebooks. I haven’t been using traveler’s notebooks (TN) very long, but I am the type to “Go Big or Go Home.” I’ve been building an insert stash. I’d like to share with you my traveler’s notebook insert haul from April.

I’ve gotten inserts from the following stores: TJ Maxx, Big Lots, and the bookstore at USF. I also recommend looking at Ross, Marshalls, Stein Mart, and Bealls Outlet.

USF Bookstore:

I stocked up on the Piccadilly notebooks. I use them in the Wide and my Husband may start using a TN as well, and this is the size insert he likes. They were on clearance ($5.98 for a 3 pack). I eventually cleared out the Barnes & Noble stock of them!

TJ Maxx:

3 booklet set of notebooks for $4.99. Themes: suitcases, cameras, and lightbulbs.

2 booklet set of Moleskine pocket sized notebooks in purple for $2.99.

3 booklet set of Poppin pocket sized notebooks in Lime Green (Tinker Bell green to me) for $2.99.

Big Lots:

OMG! I hit the mother load here!

3 booklet set of pocket sized notebooks for $1.50 each!!!

I cleared the shelf! I’ve picked some of these up at Big Lots before, but in my experience with Big Lots is I may not always be able to find something I’ve seen there before because the inventory can be random. I’m very happy to have found a stockpile for cheap!

I encourage all those who use Traveler’s Notebooks to give this outlet-type stores a chance. There’s nothing wrong with buying off ETSY or Amazon or other websites, but you may be able to find decent inserts in your area for less money than buying online.

Total # of inserts:             29 booklets

Total cost:                           $21.47

Cost per insert:                 $0.74 per insert!!!

I love cheap inserts!

I haven’t been using a Traveler’s Notebook (TN) for that long, and there’s a lot to this section of the planner world, especially when it comes to the sizes of TNs. I’ll be giving an overview of the different TN sizes and some of the inserts options I’ve found.

***TN inserts size measurements come from the Chic Sparrow website. This is not an endorsement of Chic Sparrow nor is it a sponsored post. Just using this website as an information source.***

    1. Inches: 3.5 x 5.5
    2. Centimeters: 8.9 x 14
  2. Personal Size
    1. Inches: 3.75 x 6.5
    2. Centimeters: 9.5 x 16.5
  3. A6 Size
    1. Inches: 4 x 6
    2. Centimeters: 10.2 x 15.2
  4. Narrow / Standard Size
    1. Inches: 8.25 x 4.25 or 4.33 (I’ve seen some variation in my research.)
    2. Centimeters: 21 x 10.8/11

    2. Centimeters: 21 x 13

    2. Centimeters: 21 x 14.7

There are lots of options for inserts online. Various ETSY shops that offer digital downloads or print & ship. Chic Sparrow does have its own line of inserts. Ray Blake (www.mylifeallinoneplace.com) offers free inserts you can download and print yourself or have him print them for you (check the cost on that). Amazon also sells the Midori inserts.

Once you know what size you want, you can also design and cut out your own inserts. This may take some practice and experimentation, but it is doable. I’ve designed a multitude of inserts for my own use, both for TNs and ringed planners.

Certain stores do carry the Piccadilly and Moleskine brand notebooks, in a variety of sizes, which was you use as it or cut them down.

I like to check my local stores for other types of notebooks that may fit the TNs I have. For me, I can use just about anything. I would also like to bring your attention to two notebooks that you may not have considered before.

Mini Composition Book

mini comp book walmart

Photo snipped from Walmart.com

Size: 3” x 5” or 7.6 cm x 12.7 cm

Fits: Field Notes / Pocket Size

Ruled paper; 80 sheets; 160 pages

I found them at Walmart in a 3 pack, with different color covers.

Durably Poly Cover Composition Book

mini comp book DG

Photo snipped from DollarGeneral.com

Size: 5” x 7” or 12.7 cm x 17.8 cm

Ruled paper; 90 sheets; 180 pages

Fits: Nothing perfectly really. It can be cut down to fit into an A6 or Narrow / Standard size. I’ve done that with mine, to fit my Narrow. I also trimmed the plastic cover off since this was going to be a disposable notebook anyways.

I found them at both Walmart and Dollar General.

Most TN users keep an eye out for other types of notebooks that are adaptable for a TN. These are two cheap suggestions, especially if you’re looking for disposable notebooks for shopping lists.

TN Observations (2)

I bought a Field Notes sized TN off a friend a few months ago. You can read about it here, and watch here and here.

Here are some of my observations regarding the TN.

I watch a lot of YouTube videos. Pretty much all of them are about planners. Several of the channels I follow talk about Traveler’s Notebooks. I acquired a field notes size to see what all the fuss was about.

You’d think someone as obsessed with notebooks and whose love of notebooks means I have [insert # of nbs here] blank stash, that the Traveler’s Notebook system would be perfect for me!

NOPE! It’s too much for me and doesn’t seem stable enough if I’m not writing on a hard surface.

Anyone reading this who uses a Traveler’s Notebook, be it a Midori or one of the many Fauxdoris out there, please comment and give me your opinions on using it.

Here are some pictures showing how I stuffed it with notebooks:

[Update: February 10, 2016]

There will be another traveler’s notebook post coming soon. It turns out I was using the wrong size. Stay tuned if you’d like to hear/read my thoughts on the Narrow I got.

Here are my top 10 most popular videos I’ve filmed and posted on YouTube.

  1. Bullet Journal Set up July 2015
  2. Mead Flex Binder Planner March 2015
  3. April 2015 Bullet Journal Set Up
  4. Cash Envelope Wallet
  5. Franklin Covey Sierra Planner Set Up
  6. June 2015 Bullet Journal Set Up
  7. May 2015 Bullet Journal
  8. Experiment in Bullet Journaling March 2015
  9. Unboxing Video: Mead Shopping OrganizHer
  10. New to Me: Fauxdori Field Notes Aug 2015

In making this list, I’m seeing a pattern. Bullet Journaling is a very popular planning system. I still love the idea, but I need more structure than the original idea offers.

Not to push anyone to watch any of my videos (though I’d love you, if you did), #9 Unboxing Video: Mead Shopping OrganizHer video is comical IMO. My friend filmed it during a Girl’s Craft Day at my house when it showed up in the mail. It is one of the rawest videos I’ve filmed. This notebook is still one of my favorite products EVER!

Field Notes Traveler’s Notebook w/ Videos!

Recently, I bought from a friend, a field notes size traveler’s notebook.

There brand is Buteo Bunker, with ample overhang.

Look at that texture! And it smell amazing!

Canyon included in my parcel 2 plastic inserts (card holder and zipper pouch), and a blank paper insert.

Of all my disposable notebooks, the two I had that fit were the last two of my four pack ser of Jane Austen notebooks: The Meryton Assembly and the Netherfield Ball. I saved my Pride and Prejudice notebooks for last.

I plan on using this for random notes and a jotter. It fits in my back pockets, which is a plus.

This whole thing is a work in progress. I will update everyone if I change things.
