I hinted in my Field Notes Traveler’s Notebook Observations post that my failure with the Traveler’s Notebook concept was most likely a size issue. (This is not in the video for that post because the video was filmed awhile ago.)

I consulted my friend Canyon and she was of the opinion that I needed to try a different size. My other planner sizes are a personal size Day-Timer Malibu and my Mini Flex (8 ½” x 5 ½”). She suggested a Narrow or Standard Size TN, which ends up being in-between these two sizes.

I found this TN on Amazon. It’s a Narrow size textured leather. Including shipping, it was about $36.00, and I was willing to pay that small amount to experiment with.

Company/Brand ZLYC Creative
Color Dark Coffee
# of elastics 2, but 1 is unusable because it is too short

I added another elastic later

Included with TN? 3 inserts: blank, ruled, calendar; all Midori inserts

Orange elastic (used to create a 2nd insert line)

Muslin bag

I’ve set mine up with 4 inserts: 2016 monthly from Yellow Paper House, a daily insert I made myself, some folded notebook paper for scribbling on, and the blank insert that came with it. I’m enjoying making my own inserts for it.

I like the size and how it fits in my hand. I carry it in its bag, not because I’m being precious with it, but because I’m concerned about the dye rubbing off on the inside of my bag.

I’ve never used a Traveler’s notebook before. What is it exactly? I’m really intrigued!

A traveler’s notebook in essence is a piece of leather (traditionally) with elastics inside where you loop notebooks through it. There are many different sizes and styles. http://www.chicsparrow.com is a great resource for sizes and just google Midori Traveler’s Notebook (the original). There’s lots of info out there. Thanks for stopping by!

Oh I really love this! The size is perfect! I carry an “idea book” with me everywhere, and this would be great for just that!

That’s a great tuck away size, so I can see how perfect for traveling it would be!

I’ve never heard of travelers notebooks. How are they different than planners? Would you say they’re better?

Traditionally, a traveler’s notebook is a piece of leather with elastics that hold thin notebooks. There are lots of YouTube videos on them. They are different from other planners, because the planner portion could be just a single notebook, and the rest of them can be anything else. Where you would have different sections in a ring-bound planner, those would be single notebooks that can be switched out as needed or filled. I like it better than a ring-bound planner because the rings get in my way when I write.

I want to get my husband one of these. We’re both starting the bullet journal method of planning (and he actually sat down and watched YouTube videos with me about planning!). I think something leather, manly, and small enough for him to easily carry is going to be key to him sticking with it. Love that leather detailing on yours!

I recommend looking through Carie Harling’s videos on YouTube. She got her husband one and there are two videos about it that I know of.

I’m really drawn to the cover on that! It’s beautiful and reminds me of ancient documents or something :).
