The Forest for the Trees: An Editor’s Advice to Writers by Betsy Lerner

Summary:

As the subtitle suggests, this book is written for writers by an editor who had seen it all. Ms. Lerner addresses many writing and publishing myths, giving her own experiences and how things were handled. The book is broken up into two parts: Writing and Publishing. In Writing, she names and describes six different types of writers and the various neuroses that plague them. And in Publishing, she breaks down the editorial and publication process, and what is expected from everyone (the writer included).

Opinion:

I am in love with this book! I’ve read other “writing” books in the past and this one really spoke to me. Things just made sense. It isn’t written from an authoritative perspective, but a friendly, I’m-here-to-help service. To hear that well-known authors once went through the same emotional breakdowns as I do sometimes is very reassuring.

I whole-heartedly recommend this book to any aspiring author. I also recommend buying your own copy so you can mark it up!
